Opportunities at RegLab

Stanford RegLab is hiring! Come join a diverse, interdisciplinary, and highly motivated group to drive change in technology, data science, and government!

Recent high-profile work includes work on machine learning and demographic disparities in IRS audits (New York Times story), an award-winning collaboration for pandemic preparedness and public health (description here and Wall Street Journal story), pioneering work on satellite imagery for environmental protection (Scientific American story), modernization of social safety net systems (Department of Labor background here), AI tools for legal reform (Politico story), and extensive policy work on AI governance (Senate testimony here).

We hire for a range of positions throughout the year, including data scientist, policy analyst, postdoc, and predoctoral research fellow. If you are interested in getting involved, please submit your materials through our general interest form here (in addition to formal submissions to job postings listed below). We review all complete submissions to our job postings and general interest form, but regret that we are not able to respond to direct inquiries. Thank you for understanding!

Research Fellows

We are hiring full-time pre-doctoral Research Fellows to join our research team. This is a minimum one-year position, with the option of renewal based on performance and funding. This position is a great next step for those considering graduate school, law school, and/or business school in the future. Prior Research Fellows have been accepted by PhD programs in computer science, economics, and political science and JD programs at top schools (e.g., Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Yale). In recent years, fellows have been coauthors on RegLab publications for PNAS, JAMA Health Forum, Nature Sustainability, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the American Law and Economics Review, the Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization, ACM FAccT, the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, and the Stanford Law Review. Submit to both our general interest form and the job posting here.

Data Scientists

We are hiring full-time Data Scientists to provide analytical expertise across our research programs. This is a minimum one-year position, with the option of renewal based on performance and funding. Submit to both our general interest form and the job posting here.

Research Assistants

We are almost always looking for motivated and engaged students who would like to use their skills to work on pressing social issues. Graduate, professional, and advanced undergraduate students with training in machine learning, data science, causal inference, and statistics are especially encouraged to reach out. Our preference is to support well-aligned direct research, thesis, or practicum projects by offering course credit. We may also have a limited number of paid research assistantships available each quarter. Please reach out through the general interest form with a brief cover note, CV, transcript, and a writing/code sample.

Postdoctoral Scholar

RegLab welcomes postdoc applications to work with us to tackle urgent research questions spanning legal AI, public sector AI, and AI policy and regulation. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to drive forward research progress in core project areas of the lab, developing, evaluating, and applying AI/ML methods to high-stakes governance problems. RegLab’s government partnerships surface research challenges that cannot be addressed with off-the-shelf methods, and the fellow will be expected to identify these gaps, propose solutions, and produce publishable work at the intersection of AI and public administration. See the full posting for more information. Please submit application materials through our general interest form. Review will begin October 1, 2026.
