Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to transform how government agencies do their work. Yet little is known about how agencies are currently using AI systems, and limited research has been devoted to how the federal government acquires such tools to oversee their use. This policy brief summarizes key findings from a recent report which analyzed the U.S. federal government’s use of AI technology, and the possible benefits and harms from deployment of AI systems in federal agencies.
