Dr. Avery Bick is a Data Scientist with the Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab). Previously, he was the Sustainable and Humane Food Systems Research Fellow at Stanford’s Climate & Energy Policy Program (CEPP). He holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from SUNY Buffalo, an M.S. in Environmental Engineering & Science from Stanford University, and a PhD in Computer Science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He uses interdisciplinary approaches, such as geospatial data science, machine learning, and ecological and biochemical methods, to work on complex socio-environmental problems. Recent topics of publication include automated acoustics for ecological monitoring, analysis of discrepancies in dairy industry manure reporting, socioeconomic equity implications of sea level rise, evaluating the effectiveness of heat resilience funding in California, and the extension of scientific data into ecological art. He has also worked at engineering consulting firm CH2M in New York City, where he analyzed the effectiveness of nitrogen removal technologies at the City’s wastewater treatment plants.
